The team grew to about thirty people, they moved offices, and recently they celebrated 1 million sales of Torchlight. The team became financially secure, both from the Torchlight sales and the HUGE additional investment by Perfect World, and decided to make Torchlight 2 as a step between the first Torchlight and the future Torchlight MMO. The development team grew slightly, to a team of twenty-something, and on OctoTorchlight launched to excellent sales. In the 11 months leading up to October 2009, Torchlight was developed completely from scratch. While a lot of the former Mythos crowd was disappointed to find that the first game was single-player only, an MMO was promised to come "in the future." I'll keep the rest of the story short, since most of you know it by now. Torchlight's announcement was a mixed surpriseįinally, in the Spring of 2009 Torchlight was announced.

This was also the first time it was noticed that Matt Uelmen, the man behind the music of the Diablo series (up through D2:LoD) was added, to bring the team's total to 18 people. More recent interviews reveal that the company hoped that the almost universally well reviewed Mythos would be what the company hoped to focus on to recoup their losses and get back in the black. Another often forgotten factor is that their Publisher underwent some internal management changes after being bought by T3 Entertainment, which meant the people who FSS was working with in the beginning was not who they were working with in the end, and made negotiations for things like more funding difficult. One thing that jumps out at people was the confusing payment plans for Hellgate London, combined with the poor reviews from launching the game before it was finished resulted in not enough income to pay for the upkeep of servers and company costs. From later interviews we learned that the company over-reached themselves on Hellgate London and that several factors can be attributed to the eventual closure. Flagship Studios had two teams, one in California to work on Hellgate London, and one in Seattle to work on the yet-to-be-released Mythos. In July of 2008 a combination of circumstances resulted in the closing of Flagship Studios.
